One constant truth about coffee roasting is that it always requires a minimum amount of energy to transform green, inedible beans into flavorful roasted coffee. The level of heat needed varies depending on the roast profile. However, the heat source − whether it is gas or electricity − does not affect the coffee's aroma, but it does impact the environment. Roasting with electricity produces less CO2 during the process itself, but if that electricity comes from a fossil-fuel power plant, there is no benefit for climate protection. On the other hand, if green energy is used, the overall CO2 emissions are reduced.
According to the International Energy Agency, the world's leading energy authority, renewable energy is expected to reach several milestones in the next five years. One is that it will overtake coal to become the largest source of electricity generation by 2025. While Asia is leading the way, Europe, the US and Brazil are also seeing record growth in the use of renewable energy.
While environmental responsibility is becoming increasingly important across the global society, consumer demand for consistent, reproducible coffee taste remains high. The P25e meets both these requirements with its innovative electric hot air technology. Replacing the gas burner reduces harmful emissions, while the fan responds as quickly as a burner. Unlike conventional heating elements, there is no need for heat-up or cool-down times, enabling fast and precise temperature control for perfect roasting results every time.
Dietmar Wissen, a PROBAT research engineer, is enthusiastic about the advantages of this technology. “There is still a misconception in parts of the coffee industry about the supposed inflexibility of electric heating in roasting machines," he explains. "But it depends on the technology. As well as the gas-heated version, the P25e uses convective heat transfer like a hairdryer: turn it on and you get hot air instantly; turn it off and the heat stops just as quickly. It is incredibly flexible.”
